Free 7 Paid Sick Days Mandatory Says Gov’t

There's a move afoot by US lawmakers to make it mandatory that employers provide employees with at least 7 paid sick days per year. The legislation called the Healthy Families Act, which would enable certain workers to earn one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, for up to seven days a year. Workers could use this time to care for themselves or family members. With a catchy and fuzzy name like that, who could debate it, right? I understand the rationale for the push and I realize there are lousy employers out there who don't take care of employees who are in a time of need, but I thought that was what FMLA was for. The examples of justification for the proposal I've seen in the media reports reflect the hardships that employees have been enduring when their budgets don't allow for the time off unpaid. Not that they're being fired for being sick, but that they don't have it in their budget. If what equates to say, a 3% pay cut (7 days unpaid) in a given year pushes your family over the edge, perhaps Congress should be focusing more on a family budgeting and personal responsibility act over this "Healthy Families" Act which actually does nothing for keep families healthier, yet saps business further in the middle of an economic downturn.

I don't understand why an employer now has to be responsible for an employee's lack of ability to budget. Look, if someone has a serious illness and they need some time off, I get that. I'd hope my employer would give me some support if I or one of my family members had a debilitating disease that required some time off to recover. I just wouldn't anticipate that on an annual basis, I now essentially get an extra 7 vacation days each year. Let's face it, that's what this is going to turn into.

I've seen the FMLA abuses first hand by people who take advantage of the system (i.e. the same people tend to require extended FMLA absences once per year, [often around summer time!]) and the doctors that write some of the bogus justifications are no better. What's in it for them? Just the continued visits and reputation for other would-be FMLA abusers to visit for some easy documentation. If Dr. X doesn't write up that note for my "asthma condition" that allows me to take off whenever I want, I'll go to a doctor who will. Now, this sick day allowance - it's essentially a government-mandated additional 7 vacation days.

Sick Days = Free Vacation Days. Yaaah!

The reality from the people I know that get "sick days" that accrue each year, is they don't actually use them when they're sick. They use them for vacation, for running errands or they are compensated for not using them at the end of the year. I don't begrudge them per se, because everyone else in their company (or government job) is doing the same thing and it's the norm rather than the exception. I don't know, maybe if I were a government worker now, I'd do the same thing and I'm just cranky. In my company, we have unlimited sick days, but I've never used a sick day in my career. Nor have I ever missed a day since I was working as a teenager. I guess I've been lucky, or I stay healthy or whatever and I realize it's not the same for everyone. However, what will really end up happening here is that people will take these 7 days, use them for different purposes as I stated above and when they actually ARE sick - they come to work anyway!!! Why? Because they feel like they're wasting a vacation day or money they could bundle up later. This ill concieved law will not actually help people, but rather, just continue the abuses by a sizeable portion of employees that continually look to get one over on their employers any chance they get.

This is another one of the laws of unintended consequences in my opinion - not to mention government meddling. You're going to increase employer costs, which in turn doesn't help profitability or job creation, while you reward the abusers and punish the people who play by the rules - all while not even addressing the underlying issue - which is the fact that some people can't keep a 7 day emergency fund on hand for unintended expenses.

Why do we get laid off? A complicated corporate work culture ….

[This post is written and copyrighted by FIRE Finance (http://firefinance.blogspot.com).]
Every morning a small and simple ant arrived at work very early. Without wasting any time he started his work immediately. He produced a lot and was very happy about his contribution to his company :) .

The Chief of the company, a lion, was surprised to see that the ant was working without supervision. He thought to himself: "If the ant can produce so much without supervision, wouldn't he produce more if had a supervisor?"

So the lion recruited a cockroach who had "extensive experience" as a supervisor and who was "famous" for writing excellent reports. Now what did the roach do?

His first and foremost decision was to set up a clocking in attendance system. Afterall he needed that to track the sole employee of the company, an ant who arrived to work before anybody else did!

Next he needed a secretary to help him write and type his reports.

And last but not the least he recurited a spider, who managed the archives and monitored phone calls. After all the roach needed to see where the ant whiled away time .....

The lion was delighted with the cockroach's reports and asked him to produce graphs to describe production rates and to analyze trends, so that he could use them for presentations at Board meetings.
Now the roach had to buy a new computer and a laser printer to produce trendy reports.

Not only that, he recruited a fly to manage the IT (Information Technology) "Department" ....

The ant who had once been so productive and relaxed, hated this new plethora of paperwork and meetings which used up most of his time ......

The Chief (who else but King Lion!) came to the conclusion that it was high time to nominate a person in charge of the department where the ant worked.

The position was given to a cicada, whose first decision was to buy a carpet and an ergonomic chair for his office.

He also needed a computer and a PA (Personal Assistant). So he brought them over from his previous department. They would increase productivity and the bottom line by helping him to prepare a "Work and Budget Control Strategic Optimization Plan."

Around this time, the cicada convinced The Chief, the lion, of the absolute necessity to start a climactic study of the environment!

The "department" where the ant works is now a sad place where nobody laughs anymore and everybody has become upset ....

The Chief, the lion, reviewed the charges for running the ant's department and found out that the production was much less than before.

So he recruited an owl, who was a prestigious and renowned consultant, to carry out an audit and suggest solutions.

The owl spent three months and came up with an enormous report, in several volumes, that concluded: "The department is overstaffed ....."

Guess who the lion fires first?
The ant of course! Because he showed: "Lack of motivation and had a negative attitude."

We see similar incidents happening in corporate America on a regular basis. More so in 2008 with its huge nationwide layoffs. Often the CEOs walk away with fat severance packages to the tune of millions of dollars. But the common man on the lowest echelon of the food chain and whose blood and sweat runs the company, is simply handed a pink slip!

What are your views on simplifying corporate America's work culture so that the common man who is also a sincere tax payer gets better treatment? Or is it too complicated and beyond repair? In that case should we go back to America's heritage of small business owners playing a big part in the economy instead of a few big corporate houses running the show?

We are looking forward towards your responses. Have a wonderful weekend :) .

Note: The characters in this fable are fictitious. Any resemblance to real people or facts within a coporation is pure coincidence.

Darwin’s Finance – Page Rank Leaps by 3 and Traffic Update

A few months ago, I made the switch over to WordPress and started a new blog, Darwin's Finance: Financial Evolution. If you only subscribe to Everyday Finance, you're missing some unique content that's worth checking out - I have a different focus for each blog, so there's very little overlap; you can add it to your reader or have articles emailed to you by clicking here. Anyway, Google just completed its most recent Page Rank Update, which they only do a few times per year. Within the time that I launched earlier in the year and this first Page Rank Update, Darwin's Finance went from zero to 3. Additionally, traffic's been building at a rate of several thousand additional page views per month as evidenced by the chart below. This is great news for the blog, and is a testament to the momentum that's building there.

Why am I sharing this? Well, for one, I'd like readers here to experience and follow both blogs, not just for my benefit, but for the interaction, collaboration and other benefits inured by the content at both sites. For instance, in my recent March Madness - Top 32 Posts of 2009, I shared some content from both sites and I'm sure there will be at least a couple of interest/utility to readers and fellow bloggers. Why else am I sharing this?...

For you BlogSpot Bloggers out There

As you may know, Everyday Finance is a Google Blogger-hosted domain. Some of the benefits of using Blogger are easy/quick startup, easy to manipulate and update the template/widgets etc. and of course, it's Free. However, the tradeoff is that there's a ".blogspot" in the url, it isn't self-hosted (at one point, Google took down all my blogs for no apparent reason for a week and then reinstated them; that doesn't happen on your own self-hosted blog), and the Search Engine Optimization leaves something to be desired - the simple fact that the url is so long doesn't help, plus the fact that WordPress has various plugins and settings with can help your search rankings.

Easier than I Thought to Start on WordPress

I was initially intimidated by the loss of the "what you see is what you get" format in Blogger, which required no coding background, etc. I had also purchased the WordPress for Dummies book (which I don't recommend) and was again intimidated by a massive set of steps required in setting up SQL databases and jumping around with FTP and all this other crazy stuff (to me at least, initially). Then, I read a bit more in there and in ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income (which I do recommend) and saw that I could simply do a 1 click install with one of the most popular services out there, DreamHost. They get rave reviews for both setup and service as well as pricing and I can confirm that it was pretty easy to set up and start blogging on WordPress after just coming up with a new domain name and clicking on the 1 step install button. Check it out. If you do sign up and want some perspective/ideas on making the leap to WordPress, just comment here or send me an email and I'd be glad to help.

Oh, and EverydayFinance isn't going anywhere. I have quite a bit of history here, plenty of subscribers, traffic and advertising commitments. so I intend on running this blog the same way I always have; I just have the time to do both now that I finished my MBA and I've become a bit more efficient. So, don't interpret this as the death-knell of EverydayFinance, but rather, a success that I owe to my initial start here.

...And if you enjoy Everyday Finance, you'll love my new blog,Darwin's Finance: Financial Evolution .

10 Steps For Creating an Online Store

So I thought I'd share with you the steps I took while trying to start my own online store. It's definitely not the only way to go, but it's the way I chose to go. Your results may vary.

1. Registered a general partnership and doing business as name with my state.

2. Applied and received my federal tax id/ein

3. Registered a domain name and set up hosting (I actually suggest waiting on choosing a domain name until after you've decided on a product niche to go into.

4. Do your market reseach. Find out what people are looking to buy. (What you think people want, might not be what they actually want.)

5. Once your research is done and you've decided on a product niche you want to try selling in, you must find "true factory authorized wholesalers" to supply you with the products. Beware of the scammers and middle men out there. There is only one trusted source I use. They are Worldwide Brands and they are the only Ebay certified product sourcing solution.

They have a directory of 1000's of suppliers for various products.

6. Once you find a supplier, you contact them and tell them you'd like to sell their products on your store. They will then set you up an account and you will have access to their product prices.

7. Set up a sales platform. There are many to choose from. You can start with a Yahoo Store which is very easy to set up and has a minimal monthly cost. You can start selling on Ebay as well as Amazon. What's good with these two platforms, is that you have some already built in traffic to your site. The last way and the way I went with is building your own custom site.

The pros for this, is that you can control every aspect of your design and shopping cart, but on the other hand, you don't have the built in traffic of a yahoo store or amazon, or ebay. Also it does take more time and effort.

8. Once you have a storefront up, you need people to find you! You must advertise. You have various options with that as well. There is Google Adwords. With adwords you pay for ads that show up when people search for a specific pre-determined keyword or phrase. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad.

There is SEO, or search engine optimization. This is a much longer process. This is where your site shows up in Google's search results when someone types in a particular term. This kind of advertising is FREE, but takes much more of your time.

The last one I want to focus on is "Social Marketin" it's basically the internets version of word of mouth. There are many sites like squidoo, hubpages, youtube, ezine articles and many more where you can post your content and place links to your e-commerce store. So when someone reads an article you post and they want to learn more about your products, they can go to your site.

9. Set up a merchant account. A merchant account is a company that allows you to take credit cards on your site. It's very important to have one. Paypal is a good way to start if you're on a budget.

10. Customer Service/experience. This is probably one of the most important, if not THE most important aspects of starting an online store. When you start getting people into your store, you have to give them a memorable and great experience. You have to offer them something they can't get anywhere else.

As a small business owner, you have to go that extra mile for your customers. This will keep them coming back more and more. And really the first sale isn't the most important sale, it's the continual sales you make, based on the trust you gain with your customers.

So there you have it guys, these were the steps I took to get started. They aren't necessarily the only steps or the best steps, but you can get a good start from there. This was just my personal experience.

Take care and good luck. It's not as hard as you may think.
